Targeting microglia proliferation to treat neuropathic pain

Researchers at Rutgers University (NJ, USA) have demonstrated neuropathic pain could be reduced by targeting microglia proliferation. Although previous research has indicated a role for microglia in neuropathic pain, this is the first study to identify the specific contribution of these cells towards the pain condition, and opens a new avenue for the development of novel neuropathic pain treatments. "The general thought has been that [microglia] are supposed to be beneficial in the nervous system under normal conditions" explained Long-Jun Wu, Rutgers University. "But, in fact, in those with this neuropathic pain these cells… have proliferated and instead become toxic."...
