Alzheimer’s disease pathology reversed in mouse model

Written by Abigail Sawyer, Future Science Group

Gradual depletion of the enzyme, BACE1, appears to have completely reversed the formation of beta-amyloid plaques in the brains of mice with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), according to research published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine. Novel treatments for Alzheimer's? The research brings hope that utilizing BACE1 as a drug target could aid the discovery of a successful treatment for AD. Beta-amyloid peptides are produced when BACE1 cleaves the amyloid precursor protein. BACE1 inhibitors are currently being developed as potential drugs to treat AD; however, there are concerns over potential  side effects, as the enzyme is also involved in many other...
