Digital brain model maps the movement of toxic proteins that lead to disease

Researchers at the Stevens Institute of Technology (NJ, USA) have modelled the distribution of toxic proteins throughout the brain causing atrophy, which leads to the detrimental effects of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

Recently published in Physical Review Letters, the study could offer a new approach in computer brain modelling through harnessing medical imaging analysis of the entire brain, and the interaction of individual molecules in an attempt to combine micro and macro methods of prognosis. This could help develop the understanding of neurodegenerative disease.
