Stroke recovery: could the microbiome be a new therapeutic option?

Researchers from West Virginia University School of Medicine (WV, USA) have demonstrated that stroke patients’ microbiomes, as well as the structure of their gut, may still be abnormal up to a month after a stroke has taken place. These results could potentially lead to new methods of stroke treatment.

Previous studies have investigated the immediate effects that a stroke can have on a patient’s microbiome, however they didn’t examine if these effects were still evident over time.
