Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital (MA, USA) have revealed that most individuals undergoing CAR T-cell therapy endured neurological side effects. Understanding these side effects could help researchers to mediate them in the future.
CAR T-cell therapy is an immunotherapy technique that modifies an individual’s immune system to improve its ability to combat tumors. Promising results in clinical trials have meant that this treatment is now approved for blood cancers such as lymphoma and leukemia. However, this treatment does carry the risk of neurological side effects, such as headaches and confusion. Until now, these side effects have been poorly understood.
