Gadolinium-based contrast agents for MRI may accumulate within the brain

The International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) has published new recommendations on the use of contrast agents in MRI scans. Recent findings have indicated that gadolinium-based contrast agents, which are injected into a patient’s veins to brighten tissues in MRI images, may accumulate within the brain. In particular, deposits of gadolinium have been observed in the dentate nuclei and globus pallidus.
