Written by Sharon Salt, Editor

In the past decade, there have been many exciting advancements in stem cell research into the development of organoid systems. In particular, cerebral organoids could be used as an investigative tool to further understand disease pathology in a variety of conditions, such as dementia, mental illness and other neurological disorders. Cerebral organoids could mimic key features of the developing brain and allow researchers to gain insights into brain organogenesis that would normally be experimentally and ethically challenging, or perhaps even ethically unacceptable. But how far are these systems from unlocking the mysteries behind these conditions?
