Maximizing flexibility: ultra-thin electrodes for monitoring and manipulating neuroactivity
Lan Luan is an Associate Professor at Rice University’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (TX, USA). Her work focuses on developing multimodal, bi-directional neuronal interfaces that can be used to monitor and manipulate brain activity.
At the meeting of the Society for Neuroscience (SfN), Neuroscience 2024 (5–9 October; Chicago, IL, USA), Lan presented a session that provided an overview of the technical development of flexible electrodes with a focus on large-scale, long-lasting and bidirectional neural interfaces. Here, Lan discusses how to maximize electrode flexibility, the challenges this presents and the benefits ultra-flexible electrodes offer over rigid electrodes.
