CTE pathology reported in retired soccer players

Researchers at University College London (UCL; UK) have reported chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in a series of retired association football (soccer) players in a new neuropathological study – the first of its kind. As this new research comes from a small observational study, researchers highlight that the findings are not necessarily indicative of a causative relationship between repetitive head impacts in sport and the development of neurodegenerative disease; however, it nevertheless highlights the need for further epidemiological studies in this area.
