Journal Watch: Protective factors differentially affect amyloid pathology and Alzheimer’s disease-pattern neurodegeneration

Is there a combination of demographic, lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that increase your risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD)? Almost certainly, but do these risk factors differentially affect amyloid pathology compared with AD pattern neurodegeneration? The answer is less obvious. However, recent research led by Vemuri et al., published in JAMA Neurology, indicates that a variety of risk factors influencing amyloid deposition are indeed distinct from AD-pattern neurodegeneration. The implications of such differentiation may be used to inform public health decision-making and better stratification of groups in anticipated anti-amyloid clinical trials.
