The role of cortical spreading depression in migraine

Cortical spreading depression (CSD) is currently considered as the pathophysiological correlate of migraine aura and extensively used for experimental migraine models to understand the mechanisms and genetics and to develop new therapeutics in migraine. CSD is an intriguing phenomenon of the mammalian brain with a slow spreading neuronal and glial depolarization followed by depression of the electrical activity. CSD indicates an extreme excitability state of the grey matter with massive redistribution of ions which emerges in reaction to noxious stimuli such as potassium, glutamate and Na+/K+ pump inhibitors or mechanical or electrical stimuli.
