Stroke may be linked to increased depression risk

Researchers from Copenhagen University (Denmark) have conducted a meta-analysis on data from seven nationwide registers to determine how risk of depression and stroke may be linked. They observed that risk of depression is eight times higher in those who have suffered a stroke compared with a reference population. The team studied data from 135,417 stroke patients, of whom 25.4% were diagnosed with depression within two years of stroke. By contrast, in a reference population of individuals without stroke, only 7.8% were diagnosed with depression within two years of entering the study.
