Zika virus: A public health emergency On 1 February 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Zika virus (ZIKV) a “public health emergency of international concern”.   ZIKV is a flavivirus transmitted by the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Since 2015, there has been a dramatic increase in countries reporting local transmission, with a total of 84 countries and territories reporting, to date [1].
