Several studies presented at Society for Neuroscience’s annual meeting, Neuroscience 2017 (Washington DC, USA; 11–15 November 2017), have highlighted discoveries being made in the field of opioid addiction-related health issues.
Opioids, such as morphine and oxycodone, are utilized to suppress nociceptive pain and can induce euphoria. While these drugs can provide effective pain relief, they also cause an extensive array of undesirable side effects and have high abuse potential. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, approximately 90 Americans die every day from opioid overdoses creating what public agencies have referred to as both an epidemic and a crisis. Below we highlight key studies presented at Neuroscience 2017 in this field.
