Spotlight on neuromodulation

The field of neuromodulation – the alteration of nerve activity via electrical or pharmaceutical agents delivered directly to a target area – has seen enormous growth in recent years. Neuromodulatory therapies including deep brain stimulation, intrathecal drug delivery and spinal cord stimulation are being used increasingly to treat a vast array of neurological diseases and symptoms, including Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and chronic pain.

With such a broad therapeutic scope, plus significant leaps being made rapidly in biotechnology, neuromodulation is set to be an area of continuing major growth in coming years. So, we wanted to delve deeper into this exciting field, exploring clinical uses, challenges and future directions through a range of interviews, journal articles and expert opinions.
