Immune-modifying nanoparticles could reduce swelling after traumatic brain injury in mice

Once a traumatic brain injury (TBI) has occurred, there is no available treatment at present that can reduce the secondary swelling that follows. However, researchers from Northwestern Medicine (IL, USA) have reported that by injecting immune-modifying nanoparticles 2 hours post injury into the bloodstream, they were able to significantly reduce brain swelling and damage following TBI in mice. Within the preclinical study, which has been published in Annals of Neurology, the investigators utilized immune-modifying nanoparticles that were made from a US FDA-approved material.
